Origin & history
The Turkish Van is a cat breed originating from the region of Lake Van, in eastern Turkey, where similar cats have existed for a very long time. The breed was developed and made known in the West from the middle of the 20th century onward by British breeders. It is distinguished by its particular coat pattern, called "van": a mostly white body with colored markings limited to the head and tail. Robust and athletic, the Turkish Van is known for its unusual fondness for water, which has sometimes earned it the nickname "swimming cat." Active and attached to its owners, it retains a strong temperament.
