Origin & history
The Egyptian Mau is one of the rare naturally spotted cat breeds, whose coat evokes the felines depicted in the art of ancient Egypt. The word "mau" means cat in ancient Egyptian. The modern breed was developed in the 20th century, notably thanks to cats imported from Egypt by Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy, who helped make it known in the West. Elegant, muscular and very fast, the Egyptian Mau is reputed to be one of the swiftest domestic cats. Lively, attached to its owners and sometimes reserved with strangers, it enjoys play and observation.
