Origin & history

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds of North America, originating from the state of Maine, in the United States. A rustic farm cat, it developed to survive the harsh winters of the region, which explains its large size, its thick fur and its sturdy paws. Many legends surround its origins, but it probably descends from long-haired cats imported by sailors, crossed with local cats. An excellent hunter of rodents, it was long valued on farms. Nicknamed the "gentle giant," it is today an affectionate, sociable companion renowned for its gentleness.
