Origin & history
The Kurilian Bobtail originates from the Kuril Islands, an archipelago located between Russia and Japan, where it has lived in a semi-wild state for centuries. Its short pompom tail, formed of a few curved vertebrae, results from a natural mutation specific to the region. Sturdy and adapted to a harsh climate, it was valued by the inhabitants for its hunting talents, particularly against rodents. Imported more widely from the 20th century onward, it remains a fairly rare breed. It is a balanced, intelligent and sociable cat, renowned for its attachment to its family and a temperament sometimes close to that of a dog.
