Origin & history

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an American retrieving dog developed in the 19th century around the Chesapeake Bay, on the east coast of the United States. According to tradition, it descends from dogs rescued from a shipwreck, crossed with retrievers and local dogs to create an exceptional water retriever. Sturdy, it had to dive into icy, choppy waters to bring back waterfowl, sometimes hundreds of times a day. Its oily, waterproof coat protects it from the cold. Hardy, determined and loyal, it remains an excellent working dog and a protective companion.
