Origin & history
The Bouvier des Flandres originates from the Flanders region, straddling Belgium and northern France. A sturdy farm dog, it drove cattle, guarded farms, and pulled carts, its name meaning literally "cattle herder." Recognizable by its wiry, shaggy coat, its full beard, and its mustache, it is powerful and hardy. The two world wars, which struck its regions of origin hard, threatened the breed. Today, this versatile dog is appreciated as a guardian, working dog, and loyal companion with a composed temperament.
