Origin & history
The Airedale Terrier originated in the Aire Valley, in the English county of Yorkshire, in the mid-19th century. Nicknamed the "king of terriers" for its large size, it was created by workers and hunters crossing local terriers with the Otterhound to produce a dog capable of hunting water rats and otters. Highly versatile, it later served as a hunting dog, guard dog, messenger, and military and police auxiliary. Lively, courageous, and very intelligent, it has retained its energetic terrier temperament and its characteristic wiry coat.
