Origin & history
The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, where it takes its name from the capital, Havana. Descended from the small bichons brought to the island by European settlers, it adapted to the tropical climate and became the favorite companion of the Cuban bourgeoisie. Its silky coat and cheerful temperament made it a sought-after lapdog. The Cuban Revolution nearly caused its disappearance, but a few individuals taken away by emigrating families made it possible to revive the breed in the United States. Today, this cheerful, sociable, and affectionate little dog charms with its liveliness and gentleness.
