Origin & history
The Coton de Tulear takes its name from the port city of Tulear, in Madagascar, and from its unique cotton-like coat. It is thought to descend from small bichon-type dogs that arrived on the island several centuries ago, possibly via maritime trade routes. Having become a prized companion of the Malagasy nobility, it is said to have long lived rather isolated there. Rediscovered in the 20th century by European travelers, it was developed as a companion dog in France and then elsewhere. Small, cheerful and very attached to its owners, it charms with its sociable character and its white coat, soft and abundant.
