Origin & history
The Bichon Frise descends from the ancient small white dogs of the Mediterranean, close to the Maltese. Appreciated by sailors, it is thought to have traveled across the Mediterranean basin before charming the European courts, notably in Spain, Italy, and then France during the Renaissance. A companion of the nobility, it later went through a more popular period, sometimes accompanying street artists. The breed was fixed and recognized in the 20th century, under the name curly-haired bichon. Cheerful, lively, and very sociable, it is today a sought-after family companion for its playful character and its curly white coat.
