Origin & history

The American Staffordshire Terrier, often called the Amstaff, comes from crosses between bulldogs and terriers carried out in England and then developed in the United States in the 19th century. Imported by immigrants, these dogs were first used in fights that are banned today, before American breeders steered selection toward a family companion of a more imposing build. The breed was officially recognized in the 1930s. Powerful, muscular, and confident, the Amstaff is known for its deep attachment to humans and its loyalty. Well socialized and trained, it is an affectionate companion that is gentle with its own family.
