Origin & history

The Yorkshire Terrier originated in England, in the county of Yorkshire, in the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. Derived from various small terriers brought by workers, it was first bred to hunt rats in the textile mills and mines. Soon, its silky steel-blue and tan coat and its small format made it a prized companion dog, notably in high Victorian society. Despite its small size, the Yorkshire retains a terrier temperament: lively, courageous and full of self-assurance. It is today one of the most popular companion dogs in the world, affectionate and very attached to its owners.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Yorkshire Terrier shed?

It sheds very little, its coat resembling hair more than fur, but its long silky coat requires regular brushing.

Despite its size, does it have character?

Yes, it is a true terrier: lively, courageous and full of self-assurance, sometimes even a little fearless.

Is it suitable for families with young children?

Its small size makes it fragile; interactions with young children should be supervised to avoid injuries.
