Origin & history

The Brussels Griffon is a small dog originating from Belgium, developed in Brussels from small terrier-type dogs used to hunt rodents in stables. In the 19th century, crosses with the Pug and the King Charles Spaniel refined its appearance and gave it its characteristic head, almost human in expression. Very fashionable among Belgian high society, it nearly disappeared during the world wars before being patiently revived. It is a lively, endearing and expressive companion, with a strong personality and a great need for closeness to its owners.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Brussels Griffon bark a lot?

It can be watchful and signal noises, but good training limits excessive barking. Its temperament remains above all sociable and playful.

Is the Brussels Griffon suitable for the elderly?

Yes, its small size and strong attachment make it a good life companion. It enjoys constant presence and hates being left alone too long.

Are there several types of coat?

Yes, there are wire-haired and smooth-haired varieties. The wire coat requires specific maintenance, sometimes hand-stripping, whereas the smooth coat is easy to maintain.
