Origin & history
The Tosa Inu is a Japanese breed originating from the province of Tosa, on the island of Shikoku, developed from the 19th century onward. To obtain a powerful dog, breeders crossed local Japanese dogs with imported Western breeds such as the mastiff, the bulldog and the Great Dane. Massive and impressive, the Tosa was historically associated with a regulated fighting tradition in Japan. Known to be calm, dignified and courageous, it is a dog with a composed temperament that requires an experienced owner. Owing to its power, it is subject to strict regulations in many countries.
