Origin & history
The Dachshund, also called the Teckel or sausage dog, was developed in Germany, where its name means "badger dog." Selected from the 17th century onward, its long body and short legs allowed it to pursue badger, fox and other animals right into their dens. Courageous and tenacious, it exists in three coat varieties (smooth, long and wire) and in several sizes. Having become a very popular companion dog all over the world, it retains its assertive, lively character and its strong hunting instinct. Its particular build calls for special attention to its back.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Dachshund often have back problems?
Its long spine predisposes it to disc herniation. Repeated jumping should be avoided and weight gain limited to protect its back.
Are there several types of Dachshund?
Yes, three coat varieties are distinguished (smooth, long and wire) and several sizes, from standard to miniature and kaninchen.
Is the Dachshund stubborn?
Intelligent but independent, it can be stubborn. Patient and positive training gives the best results.
