Origin & history

The Beagle is a scenthound of English origin, whose ancestors served for several centuries in pack hunting of hares and rabbits. Selected for its small size, endurance, and exceptional sense of smell, it allowed hunters to follow the pack on foot. The breed was fixed in the 19th century in England and enjoyed great success on both sides of the Atlantic. Cheerful, sociable, and tireless, the Beagle is today a much-loved family companion, but it retains a powerful tracking instinct and a resonant voice inherited from its role as a hunting dog.
