Origin & history
The Sussex Spaniel owes its name to the county of Sussex, in southern England, where it was developed from the late 18th century onward for hunting on foot in dense terrain. Slower and more massive than other spaniels, it was selected to work steadily under thick cover, giving voice on the trail of game. Recognizable by its unique golden-liver coat and its long, low body, it is today a rare breed. Calm, gentle and attached to its owners, the Sussex Spaniel is an affectionate companion with a more composed temperament than its spaniel cousins.
