Origin & history

The Siamese is one of the oldest and most recognizable cat breeds, originating from the kingdom of Siam, present-day Thailand, where it was held in high esteem. Imported to the West at the end of the 19th century, it quickly aroused enthusiasm with its colorpoint coat, its slender body and its intensely blue eyes. Breeding then refined its characteristic silhouette. Talkative, lively and very sociable, the Siamese is known for its pronounced voice and its need for presence. Deeply attached to its owners, it is an intelligent, playful and demonstrative cat that copes poorly with solitude.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Siamese so talkative?

It is a breed known for its powerful, expressive voice: it readily communicates a great deal with its owners.

Why are its extremities darker?

Its colorpoint coat is linked to a temperature-sensitive gene, which darkens the coolest areas of the body.

Does the Siamese cope with solitude?

Poorly: very attached and sociable, it needs company and may cope badly with long absences.
