Origin & history
The Selkirk Rex is a recent breed born in the United States in the late 1980s, from a female with a curly coat resulting from a spontaneous genetic mutation. Unlike other rex cats, its fur forms soft, loose curls that give it a tousled appearance, almost like that of a sheep. Crossed with other breeds, it exists in short hair and long hair, in many colors. With a composed, patient and affectionate temperament, the Selkirk Rex has inherited a balanced character that makes it a gentle companion. Its curly coat, including the whiskers, is its most remarkable signature.
Frequently asked questions
Where does its curly coat come from?
From a natural genetic mutation that appeared in a female in the United States, then passed on to her descendants.
How does it differ from other rex cats?
Its curls are soft and loose, giving a woolly appearance, where other rex cats have a shorter, wavy coat.
Does its curly coat require special care?
Gentle and infrequent brushing is enough, as brushing too vigorously would risk undoing its curls.
