Origin & history
The Highland Straight is the long-haired, straight-eared variety derived from the Scottish Fold lines. Like all cats of this family, it descends from the Scottish cat Susie discovered in the 1960s. During crosses, some kittens inherit straight ears rather than folded ones: these are the Straights, essential to healthy breeding since mating two Folds is inadvisable. The Highland Straight therefore combines normal ears with a long, silky coat. It shares the gentle, calm and affectionate temperament of its relatives, with a particularly endearing round expression.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference from the Highland Fold?
The Highland Straight has straight, normal ears, whereas the Highland Fold has ears folded forward. Both share the long coat and the same character.
Does the Highland Straight have the joint problems of the Folds?
Not having the folded-ear gene expressed in the same way, it is generally spared the cartilage issues linked to the fold. It also serves as a healthy partner for breeding.
How do you maintain its coat?
Its long, silky coat requires regular brushing, several times a week, to avoid knots. Grooming intensifies during shedding seasons.
