Origin & history
The Rottweiler takes its name from the town of Rottweil, in southern Germany, where it long accompanied butchers and cattle dealers. A probable descendant of mastiff-type dogs left behind by the Roman legions, it served to drive herds and to protect the money from transactions, sometimes tied to its master's purse. With the decline of these uses in the 19th century, the breed nearly disappeared before being revived as a working dog. Powerful, well-balanced and loyal, the Rottweiler is today employed in guarding, protection and various disciplines, while remaining a companion devoted to its family.
