Origin & history
The Cane Corso is an Italian mastiff whose origins go back to the Roman war dogs, the mastiffs used in antiquity. Over the centuries, it became in southern Italy a versatile farm dog: guardian of properties and flocks, helper for livestock and large-game hunting. Its name derives from the Latin evoking the guardian or protector. After a sharp decline in the 20th century, Italian enthusiasts revived the breed in the 1970s. Powerful, athletic, and deeply protective, it remains today a guardian attached to its family.
