Origin & history

The Persian is one of the oldest and most famous longhaired cat breeds. Its long-haired ancestors are said to have arrived in Europe from the region of Persia and the Near East, and the breed was then shaped by generations of breeding, notably in Britain and the United States. Selected for its long silky coat, its stocky body and its round face, the Persian today has a distinctive build and, in some lines, a flattened face. Calm, gentle and composed, it is an affectionate indoor cat that enjoys peace and quiet. Its magnificent coat does, however, require rigorous daily care.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Persian require a lot of care?

What is its temperament like?

It is a calm, gentle and composed cat that enjoys peace and indoor life, and is affectionate with its family.

Does its flattened face cause problems?

In some very typed lines, the squashed muzzle can lead to tearing and requires monitoring of the eyes and breathing; not all lines are equally pronounced.
