Origin & history

The Leonberger is a large dog originating from the town of Leonberg, in Germany, where it was developed in the 19th century. Its creator sought to obtain a majestic dog evoking the lion, the emblem of the town. The breed is thought to derive from crosses between large mountain dogs, including the Saint Bernard and the Newfoundland, as well as herding dogs. Imposing yet gentle, the Leonberger combines power, elegance and a balanced temperament. An excellent swimmer thanks to its webbed feet, it was used for work and water rescue. It is today a family companion renowned for its kindness.
