Origin & history
The Briard, or Berger de Brie, is an ancient French breed of herding dog, mentioned for several centuries in the French countryside. It drove and guarded flocks of sheep, also protecting them from predators. Recognizable by its long wavy coat that covers its face and its sturdy silhouette, it served as a messenger dog and medical dog during World War I. Intelligent, courageous, and deeply loyal, it later established itself as an excellent family and guard dog. Its protective temperament and need for activity make it an endearing but demanding companion.
