Origin & history
The Bernese Mountain Dog originates from the canton of Bern, in Switzerland, where it was a versatile farm dog in the mid-mountain regions. It guarded farms, drove cattle, and pulled carts of milk or goods thanks to its power. Its characteristic tricolor coat, black, tan, and white, makes it immediately recognizable. Threatened with extinction in the early 20th century with mechanization, it was saved by passionate Swiss breeders. Having become a much-loved family companion, this large dog with a gentle and placid temperament charms with its kindness, loyalty, and attachment to its own family.
