Origin & history
The Labrador Retriever traces its origins to Newfoundland, in Canada, where fishermen's dogs helped retrieve nets and fish in cold waters. Imported to Great Britain in the 19th century, these dogs were selected by the nobility for waterfowl hunting, giving rise to the modern Labrador. Endowed with a waterproof coat, a remarkably soft mouth and an excellent sense of smell, it became an unrivaled retriever. Intelligent, balanced and eager to please, it is today among the most popular breeds in the world, both as a family dog and as an assistance and detection dog.
