Origin & history
The Flat-Coated Retriever is a retriever breed developed in England in the 19th century to retrieve game on land as well as in water. Several hunting and retrieving dogs, including ancestors common to the retrievers, contributed to its formation. Recognizable by its flat, glossy coat, often black or liver, it was very popular before being partly supplanted by the Labrador and the Golden. Joyful, energetic and renowned for its eternal youthfulness of character, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a sociable dog, attached to humans and brimming with enthusiasm, that needs exercise and company every day.
