Origin & history
The Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland during the second half of the 19th century, under the impetus of Lord Tweedmouth, who wanted to obtain an ideal retrieving dog for waterfowl hunting. He crossed a yellow retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel, a now-extinct breed, then introduced other lines such as setters and bloodhounds. The result is a sturdy dog, with an excellent sense of smell and a very soft mouth. Valued for its intelligence and its balanced temperament, it is today one of the most popular family and assistance dogs in the world.
