Origin & history

The Siberian Husky is a sled dog originating from northeastern Siberia, where it was developed by the Chukchi people to haul loads over long distances in extreme Arctic conditions. Hardy, energy-efficient and able to survive in extreme cold, it lived in a pack close to humans. In the early 20th century, Huskies were imported to Alaska for sled racing, where they distinguished themselves by their speed. Today valued as a companion, it retains a strong independent temperament, a great need for exercise and a pronounced pack instinct.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Siberian Husky live in an apartment?

It is difficult, as it has an enormous need for exercise and stimulation. Without enough activity, it can become destructive and prone to escaping.

Does the Siberian Husky cope with heat?

Its dense double coat protects it from cold but makes it sensitive to high heat. It must be given shade, fresh water, and exertion avoided during hot hours.

Is the Siberian Husky a good guard dog?

No, it is generally very sociable, even with strangers, which makes it a poor guardian. On the other hand, it is an affectionate and lively companion.
