Origin & history
The German Rex is one of the oldest curly-coated breeds. Its history begins in Berlin in the 1940s-1950s, when a wavy-coated cat, nicknamed Lämmchen ("little lamb"), was discovered in the vicinity of a hospital. Crossed with her descendants, she passed on this recessive genetic mutation responsible for the short, curly coat. The breed was then developed and officially recognized, sharing genetic links with the Cornish Rex. It is a medium-sized, muscular cat, renowned for its gentle, playful temperament and its strong attachment to its humans.
Frequently asked questions
Does the German Rex shed a lot?
Its short, curly coat generally sheds little. An occasional gentle brushing is enough, as overly vigorous handling can break the fine hairs.
Is the German Rex an affectionate cat?
Yes, it is renowned for its sociable, calm character and its strong attachment to its family. It enjoys company and copes poorly with prolonged solitude.
Is the German Rex hypoallergenic?
No cat is entirely hypoallergenic, as allergens come mainly from saliva and skin. Its particular coat may, however, be slightly better tolerated by some people.
