Origin & history

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds in Scotland, originating from the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Its name comes from the "cairns," those piles of stones among which it hunted foxes, badgers, and rodents. Small, sturdy, and fearless, it was selected by farmers for its courage and resourcefulness more than for its appearance. Officially recognized in the early 20th century, it became popular notably thanks to cinema. Its wiry, tousled coat and its lively, cheerful temperament make it today a companion full of character.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Cairn Terrier like to dig?

Yes, its instinct as an underground hunter drives it to dig; a secure garden and activities are useful to channel this energy.

Does it get along with children?

Yes, it is a playful and sturdy companion that copes well with family life, with suitable socialization.

Does its coat require particular care?

Its wiry coat is ideally worked by hand-stripping (trimming) rather than clipping, to preserve its texture.
