Origin & history

The Basset Hound has its origins in France, where short-legged scenthounds were used to hunt small game such as hares and rabbits on foot. Its low silhouette, selected to follow trails as close to the ground as possible, was refined in England in the 19th century, where the breed took its current form. Endowed with a remarkable sense of smell, just behind that of the Bloodhound, it moves slowly but with great tenacity on the trail. With its long ears, melancholic gaze, and stocky body, the Basset Hound is today a gentle, placid companion that is very attached to its family.
