Origin & history
The Akita is an ancient Japanese breed, originating from the mountainous region of Akita, in the north of the island of Honshu. Originally used to hunt large game such as bears, then as a guard dog, it became a national symbol in Japan. Its reputation for loyalty is embodied by Hachiko, the dog who waited for his master at the train station for years. After World War II, bloodlines exported to the United States gave rise to the American Akita, distinct from the Japanese Akita Inu. Sturdy, dignified, and reserved, it is characterized by its loyalty and independence.
