Origin & history
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States. Its ancestors are thought to be herding dogs that came with breeders and their flocks, notably from Europe and Australia, hence its name. It was in the American West that it was selected as a herding dog, valued by ranchers for its intelligence, agility, and energy. Its often merle coat in varied colors and its sometimes odd-colored eyes make it recognizable. Very intelligent, lively, and eager to work, the Aussie excels today in canine sports and obedience, but needs plenty of activity.
