Origin & history
The Basenji is a very ancient breed originating from Central Africa, notably the Congo region, where it was used by local populations to hunt small game. Known for driving game toward nets, it was valued for its silence, endurance, and sense of smell. Often nicknamed the "barkless dog," it is not mute but produces particular sounds resembling a yodel. Imported to the West in the 20th century, it has retained a very independent, almost feline behavior, grooming itself. Elegant, lively, and curious, it is a primitive dog with a proud temperament.
