Origin & history
The American Shorthair descends from cats brought to North America by the first European settlers, taken aboard ships to protect supplies from rodents. Sturdy and good hunters, these cats adapted to the continent and were gradually selected to become a breed in their own right, recognized in the early 20th century. Valued for its balance, its hardiness, and its emblematic silver tabby coat pattern, the American Shorthair is a medium-to-large cat with a calm and sociable temperament. Its good health and easygoing character make it a very popular family companion.
