Responsible adoption: how to spot a good breeder (and avoid the traps)

Team PetsParadise5 min read

Behind a listing that's too good to be true sometimes hides trafficking. Adopting responsibly protects the animal, your wallet and helps fight against mistreatment.

01

The warning signs

Be wary of an abnormally low price, a seller in a hurry, an animal 'available immediately' with no questions asked, a meeting in a parking lot, or a refusal to show the mother and the living quarters. These are the classic markers of illegal imports and puppy mills.

02

The right questions to ask

Can you see the mother and the breeding conditions? Is the animal microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, with a health record? What is its current diet? Has it been socialized (noises, handling, other animals)? A good breeder answers gladly and also asks you questions about your home.

03

Documents and traceability

Insist on the vaccination record, the microchip number and, where applicable, the pedigree. In Switzerland, registration (AMICUS for dogs) is mandatory. On PetsParadise, verified breeders and shelters display a badge, and each listing can show documents and lineage.

04

Why favor verified accounts

A verified profile means an identified contact and checked documents — no more ghost accounts. Partner shelters publish for free and are validated by our team: adopting from them means supporting a cause.

Key takeaway

Take the time to choose well: a successful adoption always starts with the right questions.
